Hound & Gatos Dog Food Reviews

Hound & Gatos was established in 2003 and sold to Gott Pet Products in 2018. This is a family-owned, Wisconsin-based company that also makes Charlee Bear dog treats. Hound & Gatos wet and dry recipes are made by a third-party manufacturer in the US midwest.

IS Hound and Gatos A GOOD DOG FOOD?

Hound & Gatos produces a line of dry dog food with 5 recipes, and a line of wet dog food with 8 recipes.

Most of the meat, fish and poultry for its canned dog foods are sourced in the US, lamb is imported from New Zealand and duck is imported from France. Chicken and turkey for the company’s dry dog foods are sourced in the US, grass-fed lamb is imported from Australia and wild salmon is harvested in Alaska.

Overall these dog foods don’t have a lot of questionable ingredients but there are some concerns.

The line of dry dog food is considered moderate risk. It has average protein of 28%, and average carbohydrate of 35% which is high considering dogs don’t require carbohydrates in their diet. These recipes are also ultra processed which reduces nutrient content. Both of these factors make it necessary to add vitamins and minerals to balance the dog food.

The Hound & Gatos line of canned dog food is considered low risk. It has average protein of 46% and average carbohydrates of 6% as calculated on a dry matter basis (for comparison with dry dog foods), which is low and acceptable for a canned food. However, it ranks well as it doesn’t include fruits and vegetables which eliminates the concern of having ingredients with pesticides or GMOs. These recipes are highly processed which would cause significant losses in some active enzymes, vitamins, amino acids and phytonutrients and require supplementation. The recipes are supplemented with synthetic vitamins and minerals to provide balanced nutrition. We’d rather see dog food with nutrients that come from whole food ingredients.

Hound & Gatos Dry Food is considered a moderate risk dog food. There are 5 recipes that average 28% protein and 35% carbohydrates, as calculated. The company states that it doesn’t use plant proteins but does include a variety of grains that elevate the carbohydrate content. Quality points are also lost for adding excessive vitamins and minerals, which are indicators of low quality ingredients. On the safety side, this is an ultra processed dry food that has significant losses in enzymes, vitamins, amino acids and phytonutrients. There is also a safety concern due to high pesticide residue and natural flavors.

Hound & Gatos Dry Food is considered a low risk dog food. There are 8 recipes that average 46% protein and 6% carbohydrates as calculated on a dry matter basis. It scores well as it doesn’t have added produce that might be susceptible to pesticides or GMOs. But as a result, the recipes lose points for excessive added vitamins and minerals rather than supplying ingredients for these nutrients. Several recipes use sunflower oil which is a highly processed seed oil that can be pro-inflammatory. These recipes also lose points for being highly processed, which destroys nutrients.
