Hound & Gatos CHICKEN & LIVER RECIPE Canned Dog Food

With a score of 7.8/10, Hound & Gatos Canned dog food is considered a low risk dog food. There are 8 recipes that average 46% protein and 8% carbohydrates as calculated on a dry matter basis (for comparison with dry dog foods),  which is what you want to see in a canned dog food.

These recipes don’t include fruits or vegetables so they are supplemented with added vitamins and minerals, which can be an indicator of low quality ingredients. It’s preferred that vitamins and minerals come from whole food sources that include the full spectrum of cofactors, which makes them safe and bioavailable. While a couple of added vitamins and minerals are acceptable, five or more implies the food is of poor nutritional value. It’s noted that amino acids have not been added meaning the food is getting a sufficient amount from its animal protein ingredients.

When it comes to ingredient safety, the score is reduced because this is a highly processed canned food. Canned foods are heated before and during canning, which causes significant losses in some active enzymes, vitamins, amino acids and phytonutrients. Processed foods are also linked to higher mortality rates in many species.

Several recipes contain sunflower oil, an ultra processed seed oil high in omega-6 fatty acids that can cause systemic and gut inflammation.

The recipes contain salmon oil and it’s not stated whether this is wild caught or farmed. Wild caught fish are more nutritious with a better fatty acid profile.

It’s also worth noting that the line contains sodium selenite as a source of selenium. Dogs need selenium, and it’s usually added in very small amounts. However some research suggests that sodium selenite may be associated with potential toxicity, so selenium yeast is the preferred form of this mineral.

Hound & Gatos does not provide the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio. This is important to know since omega-6 fats can be pro-inflammatory, and AAFCO allows a very high ratio of 30:1.
