With an average score of 8, Ziwi Peak’s Originals wet dog food is considered a low risk dog food. The food has almost no carbs, with protein averaging 43% and fat 21.4% (measured on a dry matter basis, with the moisture removed, for comparison against dry foods).
The food loses ingredient quality points because it’s fortified with excessive vitamins and minerals, suggesting a lower quality food whose whole food ingredients don’t supply these nutrients. The minerals are chelated, which are better absorbed than non-chelated.
Like all canned foods, Ziwi Peak’s wet foods lose points for being highly processed. Canned foods are heated before and during canning, which will cause significant losses in some nutrients.
On the positive side, the meats are free range, grass fed, and the food doesn’t have added grains, or tapioca starch, gums or carrageenan.
However, with respect to ingredient safety, the food is penalized for having chickpeas in the top 5 ingredients. This is a food known to be higher in pesticide residues, which pose a signficant health risk to plants, animals and soils. Foods with the largest reported amount of residue include crops like legumes that are known to be spray-dried with glyphosate as a dessicant before harvest.
Ziwi Peak doesn’t disclose the omega-6:omega-3 ratio, which is unfortunate since AAFCO allows a very inflammatory limit of 30:1.
