With an average score of 7.3, Nature’s Logic’s Distinction Grain-Free dry dog food line is considered low to moderate risk. The line is high in protein and averages 29% carbohydrate, which is somewhat high and significantly higher than their millet-based Original dry food line.
Both the Distinction and Distinction Grain-Free lines use whole meat as the first ingredient, while the Oringial lines use meal. However, the second ingredient is meal, which is still highly processed. Meal also contains much less water weight as fresh meats, which means the water can push the fresh meat to the top of the ingredient list. Given that the carbohydrate content is similar to the Original Grain-Free line, this doesn’t make too much of a difference to the food apart from less processing.
Like all Nature’s Logic foods, the Distinction Grain-Free line has no added vitamins or minerals. While this is desirable, Nature’s Logic has not been formulated to meet AAFCO nutritional requirements but has instead opted to perform feeding tests to determine the nutritional adequacy of their food.
On the ingredient safety side, Nature’s Logic Distinction Grain-Free dog foods uses tapioca root as its primary carbohydrate source. This gives it a higher score in comparison to the Distinction line, which uses millet, which is a known high pesticide/herbicide crop. However, Distinction Grain-Free does contain high pesticide/herbicide foods further down the ingredient panel, which costs it some ingredient safety points.
The food features added probiotics but does not appear to guarantee the viable CFU. Finally, the food does not provide the omega-6:omega-3 ratio, which is a concern since AAFCO allows a very inflammatory ratio of 30:1.
