Dog Food Recall: Sunshine Mills, Inc Recalls Certain Dog Foods Due to Potentially Elevated Levels of Aflatoxin

Cause: Elevated levels of aflatoxin

Announcement: FDA recall notice dated September 2, 2020

What was recalled: Family Pet, Heartland Farms, Paws Happy Life dog food

Sunshine Mills, Inc. is voluntarily recalling some dog food products due to levels of aflatoxin that may be above the acceptable limit. The affected products were distributed nationwide via pet retail stores.

The concerned foods are certain lots of Family Pet Meaty Cuts Beef Chicken & Cheese Flavors Premium Dog Food (4lb., 14llb. And 28lb. bags), Heartland Farms Grilled Favorites Beef Chicken & Cheese Flavor (14lb. and 31lb. bags), and Paws Happy Life Butcher’s Choice Dog Food (16lb. bag).

Aflatoxin is a mold by-product that results from the growth of Aspergillus flavus and can be harmful to dogs if consumed in excess. Symptoms of aflatoxin ingestion may include lethargy, reluctance to eat, vomiting, yellowish tint to gums or eyes, and diarrhea.

No illness in connection with these products has been reported, but consumers who have purchased the affected brands should discontinue feeding and return to the place of purchase for a refund.
