We Feed Raw ships raw dog foods direct to consumer. You can shop a la carte, choosing from 6 proteins in various bulk sized packages, or you can set up a subscription based on your dog’s age, activity level, breed and size, as well as alerting the company to any allergies your dog has.
We Feed Raw has a score of 9/10 making it a low risk dog food by our criteria. This is a raw, minimally processed food. As a result, the ingredient safety score is 10/10.
Six recipes are formulated to AAFCO All Life Stages standards. The foods are single protein recipes with meat, bone and organs. The average protein is 44%. There are negligible carbohydrates. This is what we expect to see in raw dog food.
The company sources some better quality meat products. Beef, chicken, turkey and duck are sourced in the US. The beef is grass fed. Lamb and venison are pasture-raised, grass fed and grass finished. They’re sourced in New Zealand. However, it appears their duck, chicken and turkey are conventionally raised. Conventionally raised poultry tends to have a high level of omega-6 fatty acids. This can have an inflammatory effect.
We Feed Raw states their meats are USDA certified human-grade. The foods are made in a USDA certified facility. AAFCO is the regulatory body that establishes guidelines for the pet food industry. It determined “human-grade” means the ingredients came from a USDA inspected meat-packing plant.
For many companies, “human-grade” has been a marketing term. Now AAFCO has new guidelines for facilities producing human-grade pet foods. Among them, companies must have documentation. They must show that every ingredient and process is human grade. There is a break-in period of several years.
The fat percentage is lower than protein, which is desirable in raw dog food.
There is one concern about ingredient quality. There are no fruits or vegetables in the recipes to provide phytonutrients. Instead, there are added vitamins and minerals to meet nutritional standards. It is preferable that vitamins and minerals come from whole food nutrition. That makes the nutrients safe and bioavailable. A mineral of concern is sodium selenite as the source of selenium. However, some research suggests that sodium selenite may be associated with potential toxicity. Selenium yeast is the preferred form of this mineral.
We Feed Raw doesn’t disclose the ratio of omega-6:omega-3 fatty acids. This is good to know as AAFCO allows a very inflammatory ratio of 30:1.
