With a score of 10, Vital Essentials Fusion is considered a low risk dog food. There are no points deducted for processing, ingredient quality or safety.
These 2 recipes have minimal carbohydrate, and are high in protein at 13% as fed. The fat percentage is significantly lower than protein, which is desirable in a raw food. These recipes contain whole meats (including bone) and organs with 10% (mainly organic) produce for added nutrients. All the foods in this line contain select chelated minerals. Chelated minerals are considered more absorbable than non-chelated. The minimal addition of only select minerals indicates higher quality ingredients that need minimal supplementation.
Both Fusion recipes contain added herring oil, so it’s advisable to thaw the food in a refrigerated, sealed container to minimize oxidation of the fish oil. It’s also unclear whether the oil is from farmed or wild-caught herring, though the company does state on its website that they’re “proud to source U.S.A. farm-raised, pasture-fed, free-run, and wild-caught ingredients.”
The food does not provide the omega-6:omega-3 ratio, which is a concern since AAFCO allows a very inflammatory ratio of 30:1.
Vital Essentials manufactures all its products at its facility in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and controls the entire process.
