With a score of 9.95/10, Vital Essentials Freeze Dried Grain Free is considered a low risk dog food. There are no points deducted for light processing, ingredient quality or safety, except in the case of Turkey, which loses a point due to 15% carbohydrates as calculated, which is higher than you’d expected in a freeze dried dog food.
These foods are low in carbohydrate, averaging about 8.3%. The foods contain no added grains, produce or starchy ingredients, so any carbs in the food come from the meat itself.
The company manufactures its foods in-house at their facility in Green Bay, Wisconsin and controls the entire process.
Vital Essentials offers this line in Beef (two sizes), Chicken, Duck, Salmon, Rabbit and Turkey. The foods are meat-only formulas containing whole meat (including bone) and organs. Freeze-dried raw foods maintain ingredient quality during processing and don’t suffer nutrient loss from freeze-drying. This makes freeze-dried foods a highly convenient alternative to raw frozen foods.
