Visionary Pet Dog Food Reviews

In 2017, Visionary Pet Foods was founded by Paul Raybould, who spent several years as Chief Innovation Officer at American Humane Association. Visionary Pet was established to research, formulate and produce ketogenic dog foods for KetoPet Sanctuary and the dog food marketplace.

KetoPet is a non-profit organization that Raybould co-founded in 2014 to assist dogs with cancer through nutritional therapy. That led to establishing The KetoPet Sanctuary (KPS) in Texas, to give shelter dogs with terminal cancer a home and save them from euthanization. Dogs are fed a ketogenic diet and monitored. In addition to nutritional therapy, KetoPet provides veterinary and oncology care.

Visionary Pet Food is located in Los Angeles, CA.

IS Visionary Pet A GOOD DOG FOOD?

Visionary Pet now has 1 line of dog food. It’s formulated as a ketogenic diet for dogs with cancer. This Keto Freeze-Dried line has high protein and high fat content. There are few or no carbohydrates. It scores 9/10, and is a low risk dog food by our criteria.

Visionary Pet has discontinued its kibble line. It’s interesting to note that most kibbles include starches. It’s part of the extrusion process to make kibble. And yet the Visionary kibble recipes had no starches. They were low in digestible carbohydrates. So it can be done. However, it’s good to see they have opted for freeze-dried recipes. These are moderately processed dog foods. This retains nutrients.

There are 2 freeze dried recipes. They average 36% protein and 4% carbohydrates. The high fat content of 41% affects the score for ingredient quality. It’s high by our criteria but suitable for a ketogenic diet for dogs with cancer.

Recipes contain minimal added vitamins and minerals. Nutrients are from whole food ingredients. They use some high pesticide ingredients. Choosing organic crops could address this issue.

Visionary Pet developed a ketogenic diet. It replaces high carbohydrate dog foods. Animal protein sources are the main ingredients. There are no fruits, high-starch veggies, legumes or grains. Gluten is also absent. The company uses human-grade ingredients. They don’t provide third-party certification. That makes it an unsubstantiated marketing term.

Visionary Pet doesn’t list the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids of these recipes. This is true of most manufacturers. It’s important as omega-6 fats are inflammatory. AAFCO allows a very high ratio of 30:1. Diets high in omega-6 fats can cause chronic inflammation and disease.

Visionary Pet donates a portion of all profits to KetoPet. It’s the nonprofit that inspired the brand’s dog food formula.

Visionary Pet’s Keto Freeze-Dried is considered a low risk food with a score of 9/10. There are 2 recipes that average 36% protein and a low 4% carbohydrate as calculated. The fat content averages 41% which is high for a freeze-dried food but is included as part of a keto diet. The ingredient safety score loses points due to using ingredients known for high pesticide/herbicide residues like spinach and sunflower seeds. However, the company does not use GMO ingredients. The ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids hasn’t been listed. Both recipes contain coconut oil which can be inflammatory.
