TruDog Boost Me Beef Freeze-Dried Raw Superfood

TruPet was founded by Lori Taylor in honor of her dog Truman, who died at a young age after a terminal illness that led Lori to look at what she was feeding her dog. She founded Trupet as a result of that, and the company makes Trudog Feed Me freeze dried raw foods.

Is Trudog a good dog food?

Trudog is considered a low risk dog food, with an average score of 9.9. The food loses no points for light processing.

Average protein for the 4 recipes is just under 50%, with average carbohydrates calculated as under 6%. One  of the recipes (Turkey) does lose a point for carb content calculated as over 15%. That seems high for a recipe with no added produce or starch. However, the only way to calculate carbohydrates in dog food is by using the label’s Guaranteed Analysis numbers. These show minimum values for protein and fat, meaning they could be higher than stated, which would reduce the calculated carbohydrate level.

The recipes are meat-based with 4 added minerals and one added vitamin (vitamin C) in each, and contain no produce. The food is complete and balanced according to AAFCO standards. Freeze-drying doesn’t use heat so it preserves the nutrients in the  raw ingredients.

Trudog doesn’t state whether fish ingredients (herring oil, whitefish) are wild-caught or farmed. Wild-caught fish is preferable as it’s more nutritious and has better fatty acid balance.

The ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids isn’t disclosed. This is a concern because AAFCO allows a very inflammatory level of 30:1

TRUDOG Recalls

While the Trudog Feed Me foods haven’t had any recalls, Trudog did voluntarily recall of its Boost Me Beef Topper in April 2018 because of potential salmonella. They recalled their Treat Me treats, also for potential salmonella, in February 2018
