With an average score of 9.3/10, Raw Dynamic Freeze Dried is a low risk dog food by our criteria. There are 5 recipes that average 41% protein and 17% carbohydrate.

The Rabbit and Turkey recipes are higher in carbohydrates. This is more than expected for a freeze dried food so they’ve lost ingredient quality points. However, there are not any added grains or starches. The carbohydrates are from whole food ingredients.

A noteworthy item is that there are no added vitamins and minerals in any of the recipes. Vitamin E is present as a preservative. This speaks highly of the quality of the whole food ingredients. They don’t require synthetic supplements. Additionally, these are freeze dried foods so there is light processing. This doesn’t affect the nutritional value.

Another note worth mentioning is the use of organic ingredients. This means they are non-GMO and have low pesticide risk. These recipes also include probiotics, however they don’t guarantee the amount of CFU. Colony forming units are the number of viable bacteria present in a supplement or food. Recommendations vary, suggesting CFUs between several million to billions for healthy dogs. CFU (colony forming units) is the number of viable bacteria present in a supplement or food. Recommendations vary, suggesting CFUs between several million to 2-5 billion for healthy dogs. Probiotics are not one size fits all. There are different strains available to tackle different challenges. They also support long-term health.

The only other concern that lowered the score is the use of unnamed fish oil. When a source is not named, ingredients can come from much lower quality ingredients. You want to see beef, salmon or chicken, not animal, fish or poultry.

Points aren’t lost but it should be noted that the Beef recipe contains coconut oil. It can cause undesirable changes in the gut lining. It’s not mentioned whether the source of the fish oil or cod liver oil is wild caught or farmed. Wild caught fish is preferred as it’s more nutritious and has a better fatty acid balance.

Raw Dynamic doesn’t provide the omega-6:omega-3 ratio in their foods. They are certainly not the only brand omitting this information. It’s our hope that more brands will pay more attention to this. Omega-6 fats are inflammatory and AAFCO allows a very high ratio of 30:1.
