OC Raw Dog Food Reviews

OC Raw is a family-owned and operated business, founded in 2008 and headquartered in Corona, California. The food is made in the company’s own pet food commercial kitchen.

IS OC Raw A GOOD DOG FOOD?

The food is considered a low risk dog food, with no points lost for light processing. The foods contain less fat than protein, which is desirable in raw and freeze dried diets and the ingredients are all whole foods or whole food-derived, with the exception of some calcium carbonate added to some of the freeze dried recipes. This indicates that ingredients are better quality and don’t need fortifying with additional vitamins or minerals.

The meats are described as free range but there’s no information on what the animals are fed (for example, whether beef is grass-fed and grass-finished) The company doesn’t specify whether fish ingredients are wild caught or farmed. The company says organic ingredients may be used occasionally but this means the foods do lose some safety points for having ingredients that are known to be high in pesticides or herbicides. The company states their products are GMO free but the foods do contain some ingredients known to be GMO, which, if not certified as non-GMO or organic, could be genetically modified.

OC Raw’s Frozen Raw Dog Food is considered a low risk dog food, with an average 8.9 for the line. No points are deducted for light processing or ingredient quality. The foods are low in carbohydrate and protein averages 52%.

The foods are whole foods with a 90/10 ratio of meat (or fish) to  produce. There are no added vitamins or minerals, indicating better quality ingredients that don’t need fortifying to meet nutritional requirements.

The foods are not organic so some recipes lose points for containing ingredients such as beets or spinach that are known to be high in pesticide or herbicide residues. And while the company states their produce is GMO-free, it’s not certified, and some recipes lost points due to ingredients that are known to be genetically modified.

Meat and poultry are described as free-range (but not how the animals are fed), and the label doesn’t say whether fish is wild-caught or farmed.

OC Raw’s Freeze Dried are whole foods recipes with a 90/10 ratio of meat (and/or fish) to produce.  The foods all have a lower percentage of fat than protein, which is desirable in a freeze dried food. While meats are described as free-range, there’s no information provided about how the animals are fed. Some recipes lose points for containing ingredients such as beets, alfalfa or spinach that are known to be high in pesticide or herbicide residues. While the company describes their products as GMO free, there’s no certification and some ingredients are known to be genetically modified crops.

There are no added vitamins or minerals except for calcium carbonate in some recipes. This indicates higher quality ingredients with nutrients that come from whole foods, without the need for fortification.

OC Raw Dog Food Recalls

OC Raw Dog Food has had the following recalls:

In April 2018, several raw and freeze dried batches were recalled due to potential for listeria or Clostridium botulinum (the bacteria that causes botulism poisoning). The state Department of Agriculture reported a positive test for listeria in a food sample. But there was no botulism found in the foods. The Freeze Dried Sardines were recalled was because the fish were larger than the FDA guideline of 5 inches, which the FDA says leads to a higher risk of botulism.

There were two further recalls in September and May 2015, when some raw batches were recalled due to the potential for salmonella.
