With an average score of 7.3, Nature’s Logic’s Original Grain-Free dry dog food line is considered low to moderate risk. The line is high in protein and averages 29% carbohydrate, which is somewhat high and significantly higher than their Original dry food line. Large amounts of starch can increase insulin levels, cause obesity and negatively impact gut balance – but it’s worth noting that this is still considered a lower carbohydrate kibble.
The Original Grain-Free line typically features meal as the primary ingredient. This can be either good or bad. While meal is typically highly processed, it doesn’t contain as much water weight as fresh meats. The water weight can allow food manufacturers to place animal protein as the first ingredient on the label, when it might actually be lower down the label once the water weight is removed.
Staying on ingredient quality, Nature’s Logic Original line does not contain any added vitamins or minerals. This can indicate higher quality ingredients. But it’s worth noting that unlike most other foods, Nature’s Logic has not been formulated to meet AAFCO nutritional requirements but has instead opted to perform feeding tests to determine the nutritional adequacy of their food.
On the ingredient safety side, Nature’s Logic Original dog foods uses tapioca root as their primary carbohydrate source. In comparison, the Original dry dog food line uses millet, which is a known high pesticide/herbicide crop. The tapioca root elevates the ingredient safety score of the Original Grain-Free line.
The food features added probiotics but does not appear to guarantee the viable CFU. Finally, the food does not provide the omega-6:omega-3 ratio, which is a concern since AAFCO allows a very inflammatory ratio of 30:1.
