Evermore Pet Food is a women-owned dog food company that started in 2009. It began in Brooklyn and is now bicoastal with one partner in California and the other operating from the home base in New York. Evermore is a hands-on company that operates very transparently, with supplier and product information easily accessible online. Inquiries are addressed quickly often by partners Hanna or Alison.

The company produces a single line of 4 gently cooked recipes. Their foods are shipped throughout the US, and there are some retail locations.

Evermore dog food is produced in a USDA-inspected, family-owned copacker facility in California. Evermore is the only pet food produced at the facility; all other foods produced are made for human consumption.

IS EVERMORE A GOOD DOG FOOD?

Evermore Pet Food produces a single line of gently cooked dog food.

With a score of 9/10, Evermore is considered a low risk dog food. There are 4 recipes that have exceptionally high average protein of 58% and exceptionally low average carbohydrates of 4%. This is exactly what is expected from a high quality, gently cooked dog food.

It’s good to see a dog food company that has a longer list of benefits than concerns for its foods. In this case, these 4 recipes have very high scores for both quality and safety of ingredients.

The only ingredient quality concern is the use of safflower oil which is a highly processed and inflammatory seed oil. However, it’s organic and is low on the ingredient list. The company states it’s included to meet linoleic acid requirements and balance omega fatty acids.

The recipes list fish oil which is normally considered an unnamed animal protein, however, in this case, they clarify on the website that it’s from wild caught Alaskan red pollock so no points are lost.

The only ingredient safety points lost are for moderate processing. Evermore uses a sous vide cooking process. Temperatures are kept under 165 degrees, which preserves more of the natural nutrients than processed foods cooked at high temperatures.

Evermore is quite committed to ingredient quality and that’s directly related to their sourcing decisions. All of their ingredients are sourced in the US with the exception of the New Zealand lamb.

All of the ingredients are organic so have minimal risk of pesticide residues, and are GMO-free. Several of their vendors are pioneers in regenerative agriculture. This is a method of farming that improves the soil, avoids chemicals and strengthens resources rather than destroying or depleting them. The names of the suppliers and farmers are provided on their website. In addition to certifications, the suppliers provide detailed documentation, certificates of analyses (COAs), as well as certificates of origin (COOs) when sources come from outside the US.

Another point worth noting is that the ingredient quality and variety mean there is no need to add synthetic vitamins and minerals to balance the recipes to AAFCO standards as they are obtained from the ingredients.

All of Evermore’s animal protein suppliers have certifications through Global Animal Partnerships (GAP) that places importance on animal welfare. The beef and lamb suppliers have (GAP) Step 4 certification, defined as pasture raised. They have GAP certification for chicken and turkey, certified to Step 3 with outdoor access, and fed a GMO-free diet. As further explanation, producers need to meet about 100 different standards to achieve a Step 1 GAP certification, so their producers are going beyond the basic requirements. Eggs are from pasture-raised hens that are also certified humanely raised.

There are a few dog food manufacturers that certify their poultry under GAP, but at this point, Evermore is the only company we’ve reviewed that uses lamb and beef with GAP certification and is noteworthy for attaining Step 4.

The wild Alaskan red pollock oil is certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). This label is a symbol of sustainability and certifies fish was caught by a responsible fishery that ensures healthy oceans and safeguards seafood supplies for the future. This fish is wild caught so it’s more nutritious than farmed fish and has a better balance of fatty acids.

Evermore is one of few dog food companies to provide the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids. It’s found in the detailed Nutrient Profile of each recipe on its website (though not in the Guaranteed Analysis). This is good information to have as AAFCO allows a very inflammatory level of 30:1.

Finally, Evermore is a thoughtfully produced food with ingredients that contribute higher nutritional value than most dog foods. Although gently cooked, the ingredient quality and safety scores are as good as many premium raw dog foods.
