Dr Marty Pets is a small, boutique brand dog food company, founded by celebrity integrative veterinarian Dr Martin Goldstein. The company makes a line of freeze dried raw dog food called Nature’s Blend. The company recently added 5 specialized recipes to its line. The company is headquartered in Woodland Hills, California. The food is manufactured in the company’s own facility.
With a score of 9/10, Dr Marty Nature’s Blend is considered a low risk dog food, with no points lost for light processing. Freeze dried raw foods don’t have heat applied during processing, so the nutrients in the raw ingredients are preserved. The food contains several animal proteins, with turkey, beef, salmon and duck as well as organ meats.
When it comes to ingredient quality, the food loses a point for a relatively high (for a freeze dried raw food) carbohydrate level calculated as 19%. There are some starchy ingredients such as sweet potato, carrot and pea flour. The protein is a minimum of 37% and fat 27%. Fat is lower than protein which is desirable in a raw food.
Dr. Marty has added 5 recipes to their line of freeze dried dog foods. They maintain the same protein, carbohydrate and fat levels as the original Essential Wellness recipe.
Sensitivity Select is made without common allergens like beef, dairy, eggs and wheat. Active Vitality for older dogs includes tart cherry and New Zealand green mussel. Healthy Growth is a puppy food that includes goat milk and seaweed. Small Breed is the same recipe as the original Essentials but made in smaller bites for smaller dogs. Premium Origin is made with New Zealand lamb and venison, grass-fed beef, and wild-caught mackerel with specific vegetables and fruit chosen for their antioxidant content.
It’s not mentioned whether the salmon is wild caught or farmed. Wild caught fish is preferred as it’s more nutritious and has a better fatty acid balance.
For ingredient safety, the food loses a point for having ingredients known to have higher pesticide or herbicide residues, such as apples, peas, kale and spinach. These ingredients are penalized as the chemical residues pose a significant health risk to plants, animals and soils.
The food has no added vitamins and minerals, which is a plus because it’s best to have nutrients come from whole food sources, without the need for fortification. This usually indicates better quality ingredients with minimal processing.
It’s worth noting the food does contain a few “glam” ingredients. These are healthy sounding ingredients (in this case, sunflower seed, broccoli and kale) that appear below the salt in the ingredient list. This means they’re present in a very small amount that’s unlikely to provide nutritional value to your dog.
Lastly, the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids isn’t disclosed. This is a concern because AAFCO allows a very inflammatory level of 30:1
