Dog Food Recall: United Pet Group Recalls Multiple Brands of Rawhide Chew Products for Dogs

Company Name: United Pet Group

Brand Name: Companion, Dentley’s and more

Cause: Possible chemical contamination

Announcement: FDA recall notice dated Feb. 6, 2018

What was recalled: Rawhide chew products distributed nationwide through retail outlets and online

United Pet Group, a division of Spectrum Brands, Inc. is voluntarily recalling multiple brands of rawhide dog chews due to possible contamination with a quaternary ammonium compound mixture used as a processing aid in manufacturing facilities located in Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil.

This compound is an antimicrobial used for cleaning food processing equipment, but it has not been approved in the U.S. for use in the production of rawhide chews for dogs.

The affected product was distributed nationwide from a facility in Edwardsville, Illinois and sold under a variety of brand names, including Companion, Dentley’s, Dentahex, Essential Everyday, Good Lovin’, and more.

There have been a few reports of diarrhea and vomiting, as well as an unpleasant odor from the product.
