Cause: Potentially elevated levels of aflatoxin
Announcement: FDA recall notice dated October 8, 2020
What was recalled: Champ, Field Trial, and Good Dog pet foods
Sunshine Mills, Inc. is voluntarily expanding its recall of various pet foods made with corn that contained unacceptable levels of aflatoxin. This expansion is the result of ongoing investigation of corn-based pet foods produced between April 3 and April 5, 2020 that determined a single load of corn used was contaminated with excess aflatoxin.
The recalled products were distributed nationwide via retail stores and include the brands Champ, Field Trial, Good Dog, Hunter’s Special, Old Glory, Paws Happy Life, Pet Expert, Principle, Retriever, River Bend, Sportsman’s Pride, Sprout, Thrifty, Top Runner, and Whiskers & Tails products produced within these dates.
Aflatoxin is a mold by-product that results from the growth of Aspergillus flavus and can be harmful to dogs if consumed in excess. Symptoms of aflatoxin ingestion may include lethargy, reluctance to eat, vomiting, yellowish tint to gums or eyes, and diarrhea.
