Bil-Jac’s Frozen dog food has a score of 4/10. This is a high risk dog food by our criteria. There is 1 recipe with 33% protein. Carbohydrates are 45% as calculated on a dry matter basis. This is for comparison with dry dog food. This is an extremely high level for frozen dog food.

This frozen recipe ranks very low in ingredient quality. It loses points for having high carbohydrates. Wheat is the second ingredient. It also has 2 types of sugar. These contribute to the high carbohydrate content. Dogs have no nutritional requirement for carbohydrates. They’re used for texture and taste. Excessive carbohydrate is an indicator of food quality. It can be used to reduce manufacturing costs. Foods that are rich in carbohydrates can increase insulin levels. They can increase the risk of obesity. It can cause unwanted changes to the gut microbiome.

Dogs don’t need sweeteners. They’re added to increase palatability or as a preservative or humectant. It is a low quality ingredient. It can cause unwanted gut changes, obesity and insulin spikes.

There are added amino acids. They can reflect lower quality protein. These recipes have excessive added vitamins and minerals. This can indicate lower quality or incomplete ingredients. There can be vitamin and mineral excesses, especially vitamin D and copper. This can result from added vitamin premixes. It’s preferable that most or all vitamins and minerals come from real foods.

It’s also worth noting that recipes contain sodium selenite as a source of selenium. Dogs need selenium. It’s usually added in very small amounts. Research suggests that sodium selenite may be potentially toxic. Selenium yeast is the preferred form of this mineral.

There is also dried beet pulp, brewers yeast and cellulose gum. These are all waste products of the human food industry. They are often added as cheap sources of fiber. It’s preferable to see fruits and vegetables added for fiber and their phytonutrients. It’s noteworthy that these foods don’t contain fruits or vegetables.

There is also unnamed fish oil. This is a sign of low quality. It can be made from any type of fish or poultry. Unnamed animal ingredients are often a less expensive ingredient. They can be made from rendered waste of many proteins.

This recipe has guaranteed probiotics of 50 million CFUs. These are colony forming units for measuring probiotics. That may seem like a lot. However, 5 billion CFUs is what a healthy dog requires for maintenance. A dog fighting an issue would need 10 billion or more. A sick dog with severe allergies or cancer should have 20 to 30 billion CFUs a day.

There are high pesticide ingredients in the top 5. Unless organic, crops can carry a high pesticide/herbicide residue when spray-dried with Roundup. Glyphosate is an antibiotic. It can kill beneficial gut bacteria. It has been linked to cancer and other diseases.

This is a frozen dog food. It appears the protein is lightly cooked. This can cause the loss of some nutrients. A point was deducted for moderate processing.
