Badlands Ranch is a small, boutique brand, founded by actress and animal activist Katherine Heigl, and named after her family ranch in Utah. Through this company, the Heigl family supports its non-profit foundation and makes an annual pledge to animal rescue as well as monthly donations of food to animals in need.

The company produces a single air-dried dog food called Superfood Complete. The company also makes air-dried liver treats. Foods are prepared to order so they aren’t stored and warehoused.

IS BADLANDS RANCH A GOOD DOG FOOD?

With a score of 8/10, Badlands Ranch Superfood Complete is considered a low risk dog food. This is an air-dried food so one ingredient safety point is lost for moderate processing that involves a low level of heat, which preserves more of the natural nutrients than highly processed foods.

Also on the ingredient safety side, there are no ingredients known for high pesticide or herbicide risk, or GMOs. The company describes the vegetables as “gut-healthy” but that doesn’t have any meaning under pet food regulatory standards.

When it comes to ingredient quality, the food loses a point for a relatively high (for an air-dried raw food) carbohydrate level of 24%, as calculated.  There are some starchy ingredients such as sweet potato and pumpkin. The protein is a minimum of 35% and fat is acceptable at 14%. Protein in this recipe includes a mix of beef, organ meats and salmon in the top 5 ingredients.

This food also loses ingredient quality points for excessive added vitamins and minerals. When vitamins come from whole food sources, they include the full spectrum of cofactors, which makes them safe and bioavailable. While a couple of added vitamins are acceptable, five or more implies the food is of poor nutritional value. Vitamin and mineral excesses, especially vitamin D and copper, can also result from vitamin premixes added to balance the food.

It’s not mentioned whether the salmon is wild caught or farmed. Wild caught fish is preferred as it’s more nutritious and has a better fatty acid balance.

Lastly, the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids isn’t disclosed. This is a concern because AAFCO allows a very inflammatory level of 30:1.
