Albright’s has been selling and producing food for people for over 30 years as Albright’s Meats & Deli. Several years ago, Lee and Karen Albright began producing raw, synthetic-free dog food.

At present, Albright’s produces a single line of raw food, but that will be joined by a second line of prey model raw foods for dogs.

The company is based in Fort Wayne, Indiana where it appears they have their own production facility. Their products are sold by selected retailers, vendors, and distributors throughout the US.

IS ALBRIGHT’S RAW A GOOD DOG FOOD?

With a score of 9.1/10, Albright’s All Natural Raw is considered a low risk dog food. There are 7 recipes that average 51% protein and 6% carbohydrate as calculated on a dry matter basis.

This line has 5 single protein recipes (including bone and organ meats) and 2 recipes with 2 proteins. They’re made with whole food ingredients to balance the recipes to AAFCO standards without the addition of vitamins or minerals. This implies higher quality ingredients that don’t need fortifying. The recipes also have a lower percentage of fat than protein, which is desirable in a raw food.

Albright’s states that they don’t use fillers or grains, which is evident from the low carbohydrate count. They also note that they don’t use supplements or synthetic vitamins or minerals to meet the nutritional requirements of puppies or mature dogs. On the company website, they provide a glossary of the ingredients used and the list of vitamins and minerals provided by each, as well as where they are sourced. They don’t use preservatives as their products are sold frozen.

As these are raw foods that don’t involve a heating process, there are no points deducted for light processing.

On the safety side, the only concern is the use of kale within the top 5 ingredients of most recipe. Kale is a crop known for high pesticide/herbicide residues. Pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers pose a significant health risk to plants, animals and soils. Foods with the largest reported amount of residue will be penalized, including crops that are known to be spray-dried with glyphosate. If Albright’s opted to use organic ingredients, they’d eliminate the pesticide and GMO risk in their foods.

It’s worth noting that sunflower oil is included in these recipes. Normally this is a highly processed, inflammatory oil that can cause systemic and gut inflammation and points are deducted for its use. However, Albright’s has noted that it uses a cold-pressed high oleic sunflower oil. This is a preferable choice as it has minimal processing involving heat, and is very low in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) which are high in inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids and can lead to oxidative stress.

Regarding sourcing, the website notes it obtains proteins from the US and Canada from USDA-certified facilities. Most proteins are sourced from Indiana and other midwest locations, but some are sourced from the western US or Canada.

It appears Albright’s may offer a line of Prey Model Raw with beef, pork, chicken and turkey recipes, however, further product information wasn’t available on the website. They do offer chubs of beef or lamb green tripe.

Albright’s doesn’t provide the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio for its foods. This isn’t unusual for most dog food makers, but the ratio is always a concern because AAFCO allows a highly inflammatory ratio of 30:1.
